Welcome from Otto Lin

Otto Lin's Photo
Dear Friend,

While visiting this site, picture yourself as relaxing in my personal study, sipping with me my favourite Pu-er, Riesling, Sauvignon, or Shiraz. I am anxious to introduce to you my family members, classmates, colleagues and compatriots as a start. Ask more about me, them and the occasions. Give me your views or anything that may catch your fancy. It may unleash my memories and thoughts that can be shared further.

The photographs were generally categorized according to four periods: Family, Professional (1975-1995), HKUST, Nansha.

The two decades after mid 1970s was the highlight of my carrier, mostly because of ITRI and Taiwan and its extension and encounter with people in the Mainland. You will see images of many national leaders and friends. I have many stories to tell when I have time for them. As any librarian will ask, what about overlaps and cross-links? I am no librarian and will plead nolo contendere.

I will also share with you the various essays, or pieces on many short subjects. I am the one and only writer of anything that published with sole authorship. Therefore they spoke my mind on the issues and reflected my true colours. Most of the pieces were written in Chinese and can be classified in three groups.

First is on organizational values with a focus on ITRI (read more: 《工業技術研究院在80年代的挑戰》, 《揮手白雲去 江山自可游》). During the decade of 1985-1995, I wrote frequently on professional value as a means of motivation and team building. In the early 80's, the Institute was in a state of disarray. While guiding it in the development and transfer of cutting edge technologies, or the hard power, I believed the soul of an organization is in its inner values—the soft power. I wanted the Institute to think about: Innovation, Teamwork, Respect, Industriousness, Dedication and Excellence, dubbed "ITRI-De Ee" (read more: 《奉獻忘我 服務忘憂》). Anybody missed this would miss the most exciting aspect of ITRI and Taiwan during the rapid growth period of the last two decades of the 20th century. I am yet to have all, or most, of them translated into English. However, "It shall be done…"

The second segment was national innovation system (read more: ITRI: Driver of Technology Progress in Taiwan's Innovation System, 《國家創新機制與科學研究成果之產業化》). This was based on my work under the relationship of science, technology and industry, mainly in the Taiwan context. I have talked extensively in many cities and countries, on the structure, the players, the dynamics of national innovation system. Of special memory is the Salzberg Global Seminar (session 451, 441), which I have served as faculty and chair for several years. There were great interests in the success factors of the Taiwan Miracle. I would include some powerpoint or PDF presentations which supplemented the essays. Related keywords included:

national innovation system, technology transfer, intellectual property rights, quality management, technology business incubation, entrepreneurship, science and technology parks, etc.

Again, many pieces needed to be translated.

The third segment was on globalization (read more: 《全球化與中國人》, 《全球化下的香港》, 《全球化下的台灣》). How does it affect China, Hong Kong and Taiwan, now and the future? How does it relate to issues of education, politics, world peace, soft power, LaoTze and Confucious? Most of the articles were published by the Hong Kong Economic Journal during the 2006-8. The pieces were well documented and retrievable. Again, all are in Chinese.

The return of Hong Kong to the Chinese sovereignty in 1997 marked the beginning of a new era to Hong Kong and China. It has coincided with the Asian financial crisis, SARS attack, IT bubble breaks, etc. Being a gateway city of globalization, Hong Kong has suffered severed social and economical stresses. It was timely for HKUST to hold an open forum to discuss the future development of Hong Kong. It may be of interest to note that many conclusions reached have become history.

I suppose another category can be added. This relates to my memoirs of a number of dear friends, Sun Yun-shuan, Shu Shien-shieu, Fok Ying-tung, and others. Also included are book introductions or forewords that I wrote, and a number of pieces I did for fun, on jogging, reading, and others. You will see…

All the best,
Otto C C Lin
